Corac has developed multiple, linked technologies for established markets, with a number of innovative engineered products within the compressed air/gas sector. The principal products comprise our “No-Oil” industrial air compressor range and a downhole gas compressor.

Our Core Technology

Underpinning our products are versatile air/gas bearings and a high speed motor drive. 

Gas bearings work by supporting the rotating shaft on a cushion of pressurised air/gas which results in a near 'frictionless' bearing free of conventional oil lubrication. Being non-contact, gas bearings avoid many of the traditional bearing-related problems of friction, wear, particulates, and lubricant containment.  They also offer distinct advantages and high-speed applications.

Downhole Gas Compressor

Corac’s Downhole Gas Compressor concept, made possible through the combination of its gas bearing, shaft and motor technologies, has the potential to alter the production strategy for gas recovery.

It will enable very significant increases in both production rates and ultimate recovery from gas reservoirs. This development is being funded by industry through a Joint Industry Project (JIP), with trials of a prototype unit in simulated downhole conditions since Jan 2007.

Field trials of a commercial demonstrator in a live gas well are planned for late 2008.

Industrial Air Compressor Technology

The principal feature of Corac's turbo-compressor technology is that it uses no oil in any part of its machinery.  This enables compressed air delivery without risk of any oil contamination.  This offers a fundamental advantage over conventional, so-called 'oil free' compressors that in reality use oil lubrication contained behind seals.

In addition to its range of turbo compressors, which are being developed in the range 90kW to 500kW, Corac has also identified applications for its ‘No-Oil’ technology as a turbo-booster to a water screw compressor and as a stand-alone unit in the refrigeration market.

High Pressure Dry Gas Seals 

The High Pressure Dry Gas Seal , developed from Corac's thin film technology and expertise in modern ceramics, offers an enhanced solution to the sealing of turbo-machinery. It delivers superior performance and lower manufacturing costs. This technology has been licensed to AESSEAL plc, the 4th largest seals contractor in the world, with Corac receiving a royalty on each unit sold.

Business Strategy

Corac’s primary business strategy is to generate income from the commercial exploitation of its core technologies through Licence Agreements, partnerships and alliances with pre-eminent, international manufacturing and service companies. Meanwhile Corac continues to carry out original research and development in related technologies, thereby expanding its portfolio of intellectual property.
