Corac understands, designs and manages rapidly modulating magnetic fields in high speed motors. Our in-depth knowledge of the behaviours of real machines allows us to develop bespoke drive solutions for complex and challenging environments. Using electromagnetic and flux modelling software to optimise designs for high efficiency motors, we combine our technical expertise with years of testing experience to provide effective solutions to drive problems.
High speed drive excellence
High speed turbomachinery design requires the ability to develop innovative electrical machines and power systems that drive the rotating elements at speeds of up to 70,000 rpm. Corac’s engineers have many years of development experience in the design and build of high speed motors which form the prime mover element of high efficiency compressors, but which can also be used in expanders, companders and energy recovery devices.

Smart solutions for the downhole gas compressor
An important feature of our high speed motors is their compactness, offering a solution which is a fraction of the size of conventional electric motors of similar power. This is an essential element of the design that enables Corac's downhole gas compressor to fit inside existing gas well casing diameters; something traditional solutions cannot do. Equally, where space is at a premium or the machine has to be concealed inside other components or pipework, our permanent magnet motor technology offers an efficient solution.
Conventional motor drives or inverters and the electrical power distribution systems that support them cannot operate in certain environments. For this reason Corac has engineered its own highly sophisticated variable speed drive. In the downhole gas compressor application, all the power electronic devices are miniaturised and packaged to fit inside a gas well casing and designed to ensure that the drive can operate at significantly higher temperatures than conventional electronics. It is envisaged that similar drive solutions could be applied to long reach tie back compressor applications, offshore gas compressor power supplies and a multitude of demanding and space constrained applications.
